The Theme Stopped Being Enough

RoboTechnik Intelligent Technology, a Suzhou automation equipment maker already listed in Shenzhen, debuted in Hong Kong on 29 September after raising HK$5.18 billion. The stock opened at HK$419.60 against an offer price of HK$436, and fell as far as HK$393.20, down almost 10 per cent at its worst.

The company is not a weak one. It ranked fifth globally in intelligent photovoltaic cell automation manufacturing equipment by revenue in 2025, and first globally in intelligent silicon photonics manufacturing equipment with a market share above 20 per cent. Silicon photonics matters because it sits inside the optical interconnects used in data centres and AI infrastructure. First-half revenue rose about 145 per cent year on year, and the company moved from a loss to a profit.

So the theme is correct. The market position is strong. The debut still went down.

Three other companies listed in Hong Kong the same day. A printed circuit board maker opened 7 per cent below its offer price and recovered through the session. A specialty chemicals and semiconductor materials group opened 9 per cent down. A robotics company opened 4 per cent up.

The context is that this is a hot market, not a cold one. Hong Kong listings including secondary offerings had raised about 46.5 billion dollars in the year to that point, a 94 per cent increase on the previous year. One market participant’s summary, quoted alongside the results, was that people are picking more carefully now, that theme alone is not enough, and that both subscription demand and first-day trading have cooled considerably.

That is the sentence worth taking away, and it describes a stage every boom reaches.

Early in a theme, proximity is sufficient. Anything adjacent to the story gets funded, gets priced generously, and trades up on day one, because buyers are allocating to a category rather than to a company. Later in the same theme, with far more money in the market than before, buyers start distinguishing. The flow has not reduced. The discrimination has increased.

The practical consequence is that the thing which worked eighteen months ago stops working, and it stops working while the headline numbers still look encouraging. A founder reading only the aggregate would conclude that capital is abundant and pricing is easy. A founder reading the individual debuts would conclude that four comparable companies went to market on the same morning and the market separated them.

The same shift happens at a street level in any crowded category. The first three speciality coffee shops in a district all do well on the strength of the category. The ninth one has to be demonstrably better at something specific, and the owner who opens it on the assumption that the district is booming has misread which phase they are in.

Hong Kong’s IPO market has nearly doubled in a year.

Four companies listed on Tuesday and three of them opened below the price.
