Coffee’s Agencies Have Smaller Audiences Than The Clients They Pitch

The marketing and service agencies working the coffee sector carry a median audience of 1,234 followers. The coffee shops they pitch to carry 1,865. Sit with the arithmetic for a second, because it does not soften on a second reading: the people selling audience growth have, at the middle of the pack, a third less audience than the businesses they are selling it to. And 38.5% of those agencies rent their link page from an aggregator, which is to say the tool they would tell you looks unfinished on your profile is the one sitting on theirs.

This is not a takedown. It is the single most useful buying test you will run this quarter, and almost nobody runs it. When an agency slides into your inbox promising reach, they are making a claim with a public scoreboard attached, and the scoreboard is their own profile. You do not need their deck. You need thirty seconds and their follower count next to yours.

Coffee people already know this instinct, they just apply it to beans and forget to apply it to vendors. You would never buy a house blend from a roaster who drinks instant. You would not take brewing advice from a café where the staff cup tastes thin and grey. The craft has a merciless honesty to it: what is in the cup is the argument, and everything said over the top of it is just noise trying to move the price. An agency’s own audience is its cup. If it is thin, the pitch is the noise.

Now, here is the part that keeps this from being a cheap dunk, and it is the part an operator should hold onto. A smaller audience does not disqualify the agency. It obligates them to an explanation, and a good one has it ready. Maybe they build audiences for clients rather than for themselves and can show you three that went from four hundred to forty thousand under their hand. Maybe their money is in strategy and systems, not follower counts, and they will tell you plainly that reach was never their product. Maybe they are eight months old and hungry and will out-work a bigger name for half the fee. All of those are legitimate answers. The disqualifier is not the number. The disqualifier is the number plus a blank face, the agency that has never once looked at its own scoreboard and cannot say why it reads the way it does. That is the tell. Not a small audience, an unexamined one.

So make them account for it, gently, in the first call. “I noticed your following is around where a single café sits. Walk me through that.” Watch what happens next. The operator who has thought about their own proof of work will answer in fifteen seconds and probably respect you more for asking. The one who has not will reach for the aggregator that 38.5% of them are already renting and change the subject to your logo. You will have learned everything you needed before the invoice ever arrives.

And if you are the agency reading this, do not get defensive, get to work, because the same page that exposed the gap is the brief for closing it. The full breakdown lives in How The World Talks About Coffee, and it is not an indictment of your trade, it is a mirror you can choose to use. Grow your own audience so the scoreboard argues for you before you open your mouth. Or, if audience genuinely is not your product, say so out loud, put the real proof of work where the follower count would be, and stop letting a vanity metric you never optimised for do your talking. Either fixes the problem. Silence does not.

The oldest test in commerce is whether the person selling the thing uses the thing, and coffee has run that test on roasters for three hundred years without needing a dashboard to do it. Run it on the agency. If they cannot survive the question about their own audience, they were never going to fix yours – they were just hoping you would not check the tin before you bought the blend.
